👉 This week: Prevention Is Better Than Cure. Why the best leaders stop problems before they start.

You’ve seen it:

One leader spends their week racing from fire to fire, extinguishing the latest crisis with heroic effort.
Another seems to run a calmer, more controlled team, fewer emergencies, more momentum.

The difference?
One is reactive.
The other is in the business of prevention.

The Problem With “Hero Mode”

In leadership, solving problems is a rush.
It makes us feel valuable, decisive, even indispensable.
But it also:
Trains your team to rely on you for every crisis
Keeps you locked in short-term mode
Burns time you could spend on growth and strategy

If you’re always curing, you’re not preventing.

The Leadership Shift: From Cure to Prevention

Prevention isn’t passive, it’s proactive.
It means spotting patterns, closing gaps, and putting in safeguards that make fires less likely to start.

The best leaders:
Analyse root causes, not just symptoms
Build systems that make the right action the default
Train and empower their teams to handle recurring issues
Measure “problems avoided” as much as “problems solved”

3 Areas Where Prevention Pays Off

1. Processes – Remove friction points and error traps before they trigger escalations.
2. People – Coach behaviours early, don’t wait for performance to drop.
3. Communication – Over-clarify expectations so misunderstandings don’t snowball.

A quick story from my world

Years ago, I led a team that constantly got hit with escalations from one particular 3rd party partner. We prided ourselves on fixing them fast, but it was exhausting.

One quarter, we mapped every escalation back to its source. Most came from unclear handoffs during implementation.

We fixed that one process, and escalations dropped by 40% in three months. The “firefighting” stopped feeling like success; the real win was not needing to fight the fire in the first place.

How to Start This Week

  • Ask your team: “What’s one recurring problem we could eliminate completely?”

  • Track not just “issues resolved” but “issues prevented”

  • Review the last 90 days of escalations, look for repeat offenders

  • For each, decide: Can we fix the root cause so it never happens again?

  • Celebrate preventive wins just as much as reactive heroics

Bottom line?
Great leaders don’t just solve problems.
They design them out of existence.
