“What if they figure out I’m not as good as they think I am?”
“I only got here because I got lucky.”
“I’m not ready for this.”

But more importantly — you’re not right.
This voice isn’t your intuition. It’s your inner critic playing on repeat.

Everyone feels it. The difference is what they do with it.
The research is clear: imposter syndrome affects up to 70% of high performers at some point in their careers.
It’s not a weakness. It’s often a byproduct of growth.
The more ambitious, high-achieving, and values-driven you are, the more likely you are to feel like a fraud. Especially when:
You’re promoted before you feel ready
You’re in a room where you’re the only one who looks/speaks/thinks like you
You’re leading others for the first time
You’re navigating rapid change or high visibility
What matters isn’t whether imposter thoughts show up. They will.
What matters is what you do when they do.
The real cost of imposter syndrome at work
Unmanaged, imposter syndrome leads to:
🚫 Overworking to “prove” your worth
🚫 Avoiding visibility or hard conversations
🚫 Undervaluing your contributions
🚫 Micromanaging (because you doubt your own decisions)
🚫 Delayed career moves, because you’re “not ready” yet
Imposter syndrome doesn’t just stall your growth. It holds your team back too.
Because if you don’t believe you deserve to be at the table, why would they?
Reframe it: You’re not a fraud, you’re growing
Here’s the mindset shift high-growth leaders make:
“I’m uncomfortable… because I’m in unfamiliar territory. And that means I’m expanding.”
Instead of fearing imposter syndrome, reframe it as a growth signal.
The discomfort is data. It means you’re not coasting.
Five ways to lead through imposter syndrome
Name it out loud
When the “I’m not good enough” voice shows up, don’t pretend it’s not there. Name it. Talk about it with a peer, mentor, or coach. Labeling it reduces its power.Track the facts
Keep a “credibility file”, wins, feedback, moments of impact. When doubt creeps in, return to the receipts. Emotions lie. Evidence doesn’t.Coach yourself like you’d coach others
Would you call a peer a fraud for needing help? For learning on the job? For making a mistake? No? Then extend yourself the same grace.Switch from ego to service
Imposter syndrome is often self-focused: how I look, how I’m perceived. Flip it. Focus on the value you’re delivering and the people you’re supporting.Act in alignment, not perfection
You don’t need to know everything. You need to show up with integrity, curiosity, and accountability. That’s what builds trust — not flawlessness.
A quick story from my world
One of the most capable managers I’ve mentored delayed applying for a director role twice.
She coached others, ran strategic projects, mentored new leaders, but constantly said:
“I don’t think I’m ready.”
We worked together to unpack where that belief came from, and what was actually true. She started tracking impact. Practiced self-talk. Stopped waiting to feel ready and started showing up as if she was.
Six months later: she got the promotion. And more importantly, owned it.
Still feel like you’re faking it?
Here’s the kicker: even your heroes feel this way.
The more ambitious and values-driven you are, the more likely you are to question yourself. That’s not a bug. It’s a feature.
But you don’t have to live there.
You don’t need to silence imposter syndrome forever.
You just need to stop letting it drive the car.
