Self Discipline

Hey Leaders,

Self discipline is hard! Especially when you are seeing little or no progress.

Every month I set goals for the month ahead which help me accomplish my larger yearly goals, and every week I set weekly goals which help me accomplish my monthly goals.

By breaking larger goals down into smaller bite size chunks I feel empowered and focused on getting things done, rather than overwhelmed by a huge goal.

Of course none of this is possible without holding yourself accountable, and remaining disciplined.

Why should you get disciplined right now:

  • Habits create momentum

  • High levels of productivity in your work

  • Acceleration of learning

  • Boosts self-esteem and work ethic

  • You will reach your goals

We all find it easy to hold our team, suppliers and customers accountable but we don’t always hold ourselves to the same standard.

Here are 4 things that have helped me remain disciplined on my work:

➡️ Schedule - just as you would do with a meeting, schedule important tasks in your calendar and turn up!

➡️ Start - the setting doesn’t need to be perfect, just start. Start the task as early in the day/week as possible, so you don’t run out of time or other critical things come up. Start now.

➡️ Environment - remove any temptations or distractions from your station which will hinder your flow or focus. Your phone, social media, objects are all time wasters and are slowing you down.

➡️ Accountable - tell your leader or your team something you are working on and when you will have it done by, so they can hold you accountable.

Self-discipline can be hard but you will be amazed at how much you can achieve once you are focused and you have momentum.

Resources Of The Week

Productivity Tool - try Focus Keeper/Pomodoro Timer to keep you on track and to manage your time better. This is a simple app available on iPhone and Android or you can Google “count down timer”. You are essentially committing 100% focus to getting your single task done in 25 mins. It works because you are working with time rather than against it.

Mindful App - leadership can be stressful and it’s difficult to switch off in the evenings as our emotions run away. Meditation has historically had a bit of a stigma attached to it, but it is becoming more and more mainstream. The benefits are overwhelming including reducing anxiety and better focus and self-esteem. Years ago running/jogging was not very mainstream, now look at it. I favor the Calm App as Tamara Levitt is a calming influence on me. Try something new today!
