Welcome back to House of Leadership.
We explore what it really takes to grow and lead in high-performance environments. It’s not just about metrics, it’s about visibility, habits, leverage, and building teams that scale. Whether you’re climbing the ladder or coaching others to the top, this is your weekly playbook.
👉 This week: Emotional intelligence, and why it’s still the most underrated leadership skill in the room.
You’ve seen it:
One leader causes chaos in every meeting, despite being brilliant.
Another leads calmly, gets buy-in, and seems to elevate everyone around them.
Same goals. Same pressure. Very different outcomes.
What’s the difference?
Emotional Intelligence (EQ).
The ability to recognise, manage, and use emotion, your own and others', is what separates smart leaders from effective ones.
Let’s break down how EQ really works, and how you can build it into a competitive advantage.
What a Gutter Upgrade Actually Costs
We studied what roofers are saying about gutter guard prices in 2025… and here’s what we found out.
Finding the best price comes down to just two simple things:
Cut out the middleman and buy from the manufacturer to save big money.
Get guards that install over your existing gutters - no need to replace anything so you’ll save a fortune.
With a little help, you can find the best gutter guards at a great price.
Check out this no-cost website where you can ‘skip’ the middleman and get (fair) local pricing.
Just hit the link below, and complete a 1-minute survey to get started on finding the perfect gutter guards for your home.
The 5 Pillars of Emotional Intelligence
Psychologist Daniel Goleman popularised five key dimensions of EQ:
Self-awareness – Knowing what you feel and why it matters
Self-regulation – Managing emotional responses in real time
Motivation – Staying driven by internal purpose, not external validation
Empathy – Understanding what others feel, not just what they say
Social skills – Navigating conflict, influence, and relationships with ease
Together, these five capabilities drive:
✅ Stronger relationships
✅ Smarter decisions under pressure
✅ Better conflict resolution
✅ Higher team trust and cohesion
✅ More resilient leadership
What low EQ looks like in practice
Snapping under pressure and blaming others
Avoiding conflict (or creating it unnecessarily)
Dominating conversations without noticing team signals
Focusing on control over connection
Misreading cues from peers, execs, or reports
Struggling to bounce back after setbacks
In short: high IQ with low EQ = limited trust, limited influence.
What EQ-driven leadership looks like
High-EQ leaders:
🧭 Pause and name what they’re feeling, then act with intention, not impulse
🎯 Stay calm when others panic, creating safety and clarity
👂 Listen to understand, not to fix or judge
🪞 See feedback as a gift, not a threat
🤝 De-escalate with empathy, not ego
🔥 Stay connected to purpose, even when outcomes fluctuate
They lead through chaos. And people follow them, not because they have all the answers, but because they make others feel seen, heard, and steady.

A quick story from my world
One of the best leaders I’ve worked with had no formal training in EQ, but lived it.
When her team missed a major deadline, she didn’t yell, micromanage, or panic.
She gathered the group, calmly walked through what happened, and asked one question:
“How are you all feeling about this, and what do you think we can learn?”
That conversation didn’t just solve the problem.
It deepened trust.
It opened space for accountability.
It made her team more likely to raise flags next time.
That’s emotional intelligence in action. It’s quiet, but powerful.
How to build EQ (without going to therapy or reading 10 books)
You don’t need a psychology degree to improve your emotional intelligence.
Start with these:
🔍 For self-awareness:
Ask yourself in real time, “What am I feeling right now?” and “What triggered that?”
Label it. Sit with it. Don’t rush to fix it.
🧘 For self-regulation:
In tense moments, try: Pause. Breathe. Name it. Respond.
Build space between trigger and action. That space is leadership.
🔥 For motivation:
Clarify your why. Write it down. Revisit it when things get hard.
Intrinsic drive beats external pressure every time.
💬 For empathy:
Use this question more often: “How are you feeling about this?”
Then stop talking. Really listen. You’ll be shocked what you learn.
🧠 For social skills:
Practice “impact over intent.”
Instead of “That wasn’t what I meant,” try: “Thanks for the feedback, I didn’t realise how that landed. Let me reframe.”
That one shift will 10x your influence.
Bottom line?
Your team doesn’t just want strategy and execution.
They want to feel led by someone who gets it.
The most scalable leaders aren’t just smart.
They’re emotionally attuned, self-aware, and relationally skilled.
They know how to show up — and how to read the room.
