I want to talk about something that’s come up a lot recently — in team meetings, 1 to 1s, and coaching conversations with leaders.
We’re in a season of slower growth.
Revenue’s steady, but not soaring. Projects are still moving, but the energy feels a bit... muted. People are asking (out loud or quietly): “What are we building toward right now?”
And as leaders, we’re feeling it too.
This is when your leadership matters more than ever.
Not because you have all the answers. But because how you show up right now sets the emotional tone for your team — whether you mean to or not.
Let’s unpack what it looks like to lead with steady optimism and engagement in a moment that’s less “rocket ship,” more “rowboat.”
🧭 First: Be the Thermostat, Not the Thermometer
You may have heard this metaphor before, but it’s worth repeating: A thermometer reflects the temperature. A thermostat sets it.
When growth slows or priorities feel fuzzy, it’s easy to mirror the mood around you. But great leaders resist that pull. Instead, they set the tone — intentionally, consistently, authentically.
That doesn’t mean ignoring challenges or pretending everything’s great.
It means showing your team that this season still matters. That we still control the climate — even when the forecast isn’t exciting.
🧠 People Don’t Need Hype. They Need Meaning.
One of the most common mistakes leaders make during slow growth is trying to artificially boost energy:
“Let’s stay positive!”
“Big things are still coming!”
“Keep pushing!”
These sound good — but if they’re not grounded in reality, they can backfire. They create dissonance.
Instead, focus on clarity and purpose. People want to know:
What are we working on now that truly matters?
Who does it help?
How will we know we’ve made a difference?
Make the work feel meaningful, even if it’s not headline-grabbing. Purpose sustains engagement far more than pep talks.

🏆 Celebrate Progress (Especially the Small Kind)
In slower seasons, the wins are often quieter. Less public. More incremental.
That’s okay. But you need to find them, frame them, and share them.
A fix that improves customer experience by 3%.
A team member who unblocked a tricky issue.
A new internal process that saves 15 minutes a day.
These things matter. They build momentum. They remind your team: We’re still moving forward.
Make space every week to spotlight progress. Not just performance metrics — but effort, learning, collaboration, resilience.
📣 Engagement Starts With Listening
When things feel slow, it’s tempting to default to broadcasting more — more updates, more plans, more direction.
But engagement is a two-way street. And during uncertain times, listening is your most powerful tool.
Ask your team:
“What’s feeling energising to you right now?”
“Where are you feeling stuck or disconnected?”
“What ideas do you have that we haven’t explored yet?”
Even just asking these questions builds trust. It shows people they’re not just along for the ride — they shape the journey.
🔥 Practical Steps to Try This Month
If you’re wondering how to apply this, here are five actions you can take right now:
Do a purpose reset — In your next team meeting, revisit your team’s “why.” Why does this work matter — for customers, for the company, for the team?
Start a “momentum board” — Track and share small wins every week: solved problems, happy customer quotes, smart experiments.
Run an energy pulse — Ask your team: “What’s one thing that energises you about your work right now? One thing that drains you?” Use the data.
Recast goals as impact — Translate any quarterly targets into real-world outcomes. Connect the dots between numbers and meaning.
Model calm optimism — Be honest about the season, but stay focused on what can be influenced. Show belief in your team’s ability to make progress.
💬 Final Thought: Leadership Isn’t About the Mood — It Creates the Mood
Growth isn’t always linear. Sometimes it plateaus. Sometimes it dips.
But your leadership is never on pause.
Your team is watching how you show up. If you bring intention, presence, and a sense of purpose — they’ll feel it.
And when the pace picks back up (as it always does), your team won’t be running on empty. They’ll be engaged, grounded, and ready.
So today, don’t worry about creating fake excitement.
Focus on creating real clarity. Real meaning. And real momentum — one steady step at a time.
You’ve got this.
