Daily Leader Tip: Intervention Bias

Intervention Bias is an interesting concept, especially if you are a Leader and enjoy finding solutions to problems.

“humans are likely to introduce unnecessary changes to feel in control of the situation, when perhaps the best action is to not act.”

From time to time, something will break or a mistake will occur, and we’ll look for a solution.

In reality, the parameters and particular environmental conditions were unusual and unlikely to happen again.

Introducing a change to counteract a rare situation may actually create other issues that multiply the original problem.

To avoid Intervention Bias, create a null hypothesis.

What would happen if you did nothing or assumed the situation was an accident or error?

Is the juice worth the squeeze?

By reviewing the null, you can make an assessment if there is value in introducing a new process or procedure.

This will allow you to weigh up whether the time and effort to bring about change in your organisation is really worth it, or if the current process works just fine 95% of the time.
