Belief

Morning Leaders,

In any walk of life, and whatever role you’re in. Your thoughts and emotions drive your outcomes. Confidence comes from having a feeling of belief in yourself and what you are doing.

Leaders who have achieved success and have fast tracked their career, have done so because they believed in themselves, believed they could make a difference and took huge amounts of action.

It starts by overcoming any thoughts or negative self talk, that you aren’t good enough or won’t succeed. Make a conscious decision to turn up. Once you turn up you put yourself in a position to take action and when you take action you start to see momentum. Momentum builds on any existing self belief and takes you towards your goals and results.

Turning up might feel uncomfortable, but do it anyway. It’s the first step. You will make mistakes and fail along the road but don’t stop, keep going. If you want to upgrade yourself, progress in your career and lead a more fulfilling lifestyle, get comfortable being uncomfortable.

What can I do to build more belief and confidence in myself?

1) Daily task - do something everyday that sucks. Whether it’s a 5k run, having a difficult conversation with someone or doing something you keep putting off. Just do it. This habit is probably the best thing you can do to build the mental capacity and begin to feel more confident in yourself with repeated action.

2) Circle of influence - go hang out with experienced, inspiring and confident people. Perhaps people who are where you want to be. They may have achieved a lot and made a big difference. How do they think? How do they behave? What’s the secret to their success? You become who you spend time with. Don’t reinvent the wheel. Go and run around with confident people who are a little bit further along on their journey, no surprises when you start to think and behave more like them.

3) Speak up - whether it’s in a meeting or a large group. Share your opinion. Speak up. Say something. It’s often arrogant of us to think other people are thinking or judging us, most of the time they have their own challenges and struggles to worry about. They haven’t got time to have us on their mind. Speaking up is the confidence-building vitamin which will help you overcome that fear and help you recognise you have something to give.

4) Fail quickly - if you suck at something, that’s okay. Adopt a Growth Mindset, we don’t start out in life being good at walking or talking, we learn. With practice you can master it and this will establish confidence in you, but you need to work on it. Repetition is the mother of skill. Try, fail, get feedback, iterate, try again. Every iteration, just like a book or software version, you are getting better. The quicker you repeat this process, the quicker you will get better.

Whatever challenge you’re up against. Keep at it. You will get there eventually, and a lack of self belief will slow you down, which is why it’s important to surround yourself with a support network or tribe that will hold you accountable and give you that little nudge or inspiration to keep going. You’ll never get there if you throw in the towel and accept things the way they are. Don’t limit yourself, stay hungry.

All the best
