Moving out of your Comfort Zone

The true feeling of growth is progression.

You’re moving forward.

This doesn’t necessarily need to be a new title, a promotion or a significant change, but your environment is allowing you to learn new things, hang out with good people, acquire new skills and ultimately become better than you were yesterday.

“Your comfort zone is a beautiful place, but nothing grows there.”

I am a visual learner and I am hoping the zones graphic which I am going to talk about today will resonate with you.

The zones graphic still stands true and is a good reminder of when it’s time for a change.

When we’re making progress and growing we feel fulfilled.

Progress and growth don’t come from every zone.

They specifically blossom in the growth zone.

What are the 4 zones?

1/ Comfort zone - is where we feel in control and it’s our safe haven.

There are little to no risks or any turbulence here.

Things are very comfortable to us and we’re good with that for now.

The things we’re doing may not necessarily be comfortable for everyone but we have the skills, experience or knowledge to take care of them with little discomfort.

2/ Fear Zone - as we move out of our place of comfort, we arrive in fear.

The further we move away from our comfort the more fear we get.

Sometimes even regret our decision and move back.

We may find ourselves making excuses and blaming others, which altogether knocks our confidence.

3/ Learning Zone - we’re not cooking with gas just yet, but this zone is on the right path. We’ve moved out of fear and into learning.

We’re taking some steps in the right direction to get a little more uncomfortable.

This zone is where we want to be short term, acquiring new skills, meeting new people, sharpening our mindset and beginning to stretch ourselves further.

4/ Growth Zone - you’ve made it into the growth zone, but this zone is not a destination.

It’s an ongoing battle to stay here, and something you have to continue to work at.

When you win and overcome that difficult thing, you sit at the table of success and enjoy it.

But if you sit there too long you’ll begin to decline and become complacent which will lead to you slipping out of the growth zone.

The simplest way to avoid this:

Get down from the table and go after the next goal or challenge.

It’s a constant evolution.

So I hate to stay, the growth zone may leave you feeling uncomfortable.

But that’s a good thing.

As humans, we need some challenges.

Having to grapple with and think differently will elevate our minds and will lead to a higher level of fulfilment.

If you’re feeling a little unfulfilled or seeing a lack of progress, perhaps it’s time for some action and discomfort to get you from where you are to where you want to be.

All the best

David
